Henry Chinaski, Bukowski’s alter-ego, is pushed to translate a semi-autobiographical book into a screenplay for John Pinchot. He reluctantly agrees, and is thrust into the otherworld called Hollywood. There are many scandalous books about life in Hollywood, but none as poetic and dangerous as this, a fictional chronicle of Bukowskis experiences writing the screenplay for Barfly. Henry Chinaski has a penchant for booze, women and horse-racing. On his precarious journey from poet to screenwriter he encounters a host of well-known stars and lays bare the absurdity and egotism of the film industry.

A friend gave me this book, telling me only that it was hilarious. I put it on the to-read shelf, where it sat for years. The name of the author, Charles Bukowski, didnt register until I finally got around to picking up the book a couple of weeks ago, and then it rang a bell ... didnt he have a cult reputation and following back in my college days?

Well, whatever, this would be my first exposure to Bukowskis writing. And I have to say I enjoyed the experience, this in spite of the theme of excessive, all-day drinking underlying the characters actions and motivations, normally a turnoff for me. Somehow Hank Chinaski and his girlfriend Helen manage the daily hangovers while learning the ins and outs of writing a Hollywood movie.

As a sendup of Hollywood, the novel succeeds, and even in 2018, holds up against what we know of Hollywood and the movie industry today. I didnt realize until the end that the novel is autobiographical. In real life, Charles Bukowski wrote the screenplay for a movie titled @[email protected] (which I have never seen); the movie Hank Chinaski writes in this novel is one & the same, as are many of the frustrations ... endless production delays, cancellations and renewals, show-stopping movie star demands, the constant lying and insincerity ... he must have experienced in real life.

I cringed at the names Bukowski makes up for actual industry figures (Berner Werzog, to give you an idea), because even in disguise its still star-struck name-dropping, and as mentioned I really didnt like the casual treatment of functional alcoholism ... but those were my only objections.

As my friend told me, @[email protected] is in fact a hilarious read. Kind of lightweight, but if youre a Bukowski fan, its no doubt an essential part of the canon.

Okay my real rating is a 3.5 but goodreads is dumb. I was in the library on my college campus looking for something by William Burroughs but not being able to find it, I walked over to the shelf next to it which had BUKOWSKI. I knew the name, didnt know anything by him, and Hollywood was the biggest and most colorful one so thats what I went with! I didnt find the subject matter to be all that interesting and I was entirely unfamiliar with the movie that the books about, but I enjoyed Bukowskis writing and I flew through the book. Bukowski (sorry, Chinaski) is just a bitter old drunk, and while I tend to find those kinds of characters intolerable I found him to be slightly more interesting than intolerable. All in all, if youre bored and like Hollywood, give Hollywood a read. Its got a good sense of humor, interesting characters (and its fun to try and guess who their real life counterparts are), and its meta enough to yield a few @oh [email protected] moments.

By the time he got to Hollywood, Chinaski just didnt have much lead left in his pencil.

I would have given this a 3 but because its Bukowski and because there were a few nuggets of quotable wisdom in it I gave it a four.
